Vietnam spent more than 5.4 billion U.S. dollars importing over 5.1 million tons of steel and iron in the first five months of this year.

Finished steel consumption in April-May rose by 10.1pc on the year to 18.5mn t, while production climbed by 7.7pc against the previous year to 19.11mn t.

Japan's ferrous scrap exports continued to recover in April on sustained demand from South Korea.

Its largest suppliers of steel and iron included China, Japan, South Korea and India, said the General Department of Vietnam Customs.
