The green transformation of the steel industry is extremely urgent, mainly due to its huge carbon emission base and the rigid requirements of national strategy. Emission reduction in the steel industry is imperative," said Chen Leiming, Executive President and Secretary-General of the China Metal Materials Circulation Association, in an exclusive interview with Times Weekly. He stated that the steel industry is one of the highest carbon-emitting sectors in China's manufacturing industry, accounting for about 15% of the country's total carbon emissions. This significant share of emissions determines that the steel industry must be a key focus for emission reduction.Chen Leiming indicated that the green transformation of the steel industry will play a decisive role in achieving the country's "dual carbon" goals. As a major emitter, the successful transformation of the steel industry is one of the prerequisites for society to achieve "carbon peak" and "carbon neutrality." Its contribution lies not only in the direct reduction of emissions but also in strongly driving the green and low-carbon development of upstream and downstream industrial chains. Furthermore, the green transformation of steel enterprises will result in the passive elimination of some small and medium-sized steel companies that lose competitiveness, thereby further improving product quality and industry concentration. With the significant increase in the proportion of electric furnace short-process steelmaking, the industrial application of frontier technologies such as hydrogen metallurgy is an important technical support in the green transformation of steel. Chen Leiming believes that compared to traditional long-process steelmaking, electric furnace steelmaking can save more than 60% of energy and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 70%. Hydrogen metallurgy, on the other hand, changes the ironmaking chemical principle that relied on carbon as a reducing agent for over a century, achieving "near-zero carbon emissions" directly from the source.
